Water-Based Work 2016

The above watercolors were created at the Nota Bene Loft in Cadaqués, Spain in June, 2016. This particular series began with a given composition: the motif of a double window. It is an idea that spontaneously suggested itself to me almost three decades earlier, when I was painting as a student. At that time, however, the motif displayed little within the rectangles of the suggestive windows. For these works, on the other hand, I have made the glowing forms in those spaces the central features.

It was a thorough pleasure to work for two weeks at this private residency. Located in a somewhat remote region in northern Catalonia on the Mediterranean, Cadaqués is a virtual dreamscape of sights, sounds, light and color. The time spent there gave me an opportunity to develop this type of imagery for smaller watercolors. And, additionally, I was able to combine a previously realized motif with more recent and mature features.
