Oil & Water-Based Work 2018

The above work represents a sample of media and processes that happened at different times of the year at my Carroll Gardens workspace in 2018. The three watercolors (left, center-right and right; or on mobile phones, top and bottom two) are a part of a larger body of 22 x 30 inch images on 300 lb. Arches paper made in the summer of that year. The oil on linen (center-left; or on mobile phones, second from top) I completed in the spring. Its conception began as a series of rough images from which the present painting developed. These examples highlight an essential difference between the two media: watercolor tend to be more chance-oriented and immediate; whereas oils tend to involve a more complex and layered process leading to a gradual resolution.
