Water-Based Work 2012

In the late spring of 2012 my partner Nicole Schmölzer generously gave me access to her beautiful little workspace in D.U.M.B.O., Brooklyn.  There, over a period of about 3 months, I produced my first series of larger-scale watercolors. This was with 22 x 30 inch Arches and Fabriano 300 lb. hot press paper. While I did not realize it then, this work would come to represent a new direction for me in water-based media. The above pieces emerged very spontaneously, without any planning or preconceived ideas in mind. As anyone who loves watercolor will say, it is great when things work out! This is to say, the element of chance is a prominent feature of the medium. And here we celebrate this aspect which can give our work some of the most strikingly unexpected features. These watercolors and others would lead to a number of new and interesting developments over the next several years.
