Oil-Based Work 2014

One of my most pivotal moments for oil painting happened in the summer of 2014 in Switzerland. There in the cozy areas of my “chalet” workspace I realized some of the potentials of an intense and colorful imagery I desired. Ironically, these paintings actually grew out of line sketches. They are, in other words, images derived from drawing–“colorized” and given a suggestion of form through paint. In this respect they bear some resemblance to sculpture: hinting at spatial qualities, they suggest places or events in time. This work in particular also highlights my familiar relationship of painting to sculpture. While suggesting the same general themes or content, painting renders it as a picture whereas sculpture transforms it into a more tangible event in space (and time). Paintings like these may also serve as a basis for sculpture.
